Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, the smallest moments of joy can become powerful tools for emotional healing. Through its humanitarian mission, LIFE UA continues to create safe spaces for children affected by conflict—places where they can laugh, learn, and simply feel like children again. One of the most touching examples is the candy-making workshop held recently in Poltava.
Creating joy in the middle of uncertainty
Inside a warm and rustic local restaurant, a long table was prepared with molds, colorful ingredients, and chef hats waiting for small hands. The room soon filled with excited voices as children gathered, each proudly wearing a chef’s hat and apron. Guided by volunteers and instructors, the children mixed ingredients, poured candy mixtures into molds, decorated their creations, and shared smiles with one another.
The activity took place in the safe basement space of the building, chosen specifically for its proximity to a shelter. This ensured that children and volunteers could quickly move to safety in case of air-raid alarms—allowing the workshop to continue in a protected, controlled, and reassuring environment.
The workshop offered the children a positive, hands-on experience that captured their attention and sparked their creativity. It allowed them to focus on something joyful and engaging—helping them temporarily escape the stress and fear caused by the war.
Strengthening emotional resilience
For children living through conflict, structured creative play has been shown to reduce anxiety, build confidence, and encourage social connection. During the workshop, the children worked together, helped one another, and proudly presented their finished candies. These moments strengthen a child’s sense of teamwork, independence, and accomplishment.
LIFE UA’s volunteers also play a key role, offering emotional support, encouragement, and companionship. Even a warm smile or a shared laugh can bring comfort to a child navigating difficult times.

A community united for the children
The workshop concluded with a group photo outside the restaurant—children smiling confidently and giving a thumbs up, expressing hope and enthusiasm. Despite the challenges these children face daily, LIFE UA continues to remind them that they are supported, valued, and not forgotten.

With every event, LIFE UA moves closer to its mission: helping Ukrainian children rebuild hope, regain strength, and find moments of happiness even during war.
